The Purpose

Definition: purpose/ˈpəːpəs/noun – The reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.

I chose the specific name ‘The Purpose’ because I believe us as Christians need to be enlightened on whether we are walking in our purpose or understand the purpose of our existence. In Jeremiah 1:5 it says “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” This scripture actually came to me once in a dream at the age of 25. With a low education of the living word I did not comprehend or understand it’s meaning. However now I can declare that it was ultimately the call of God.

Throughout my life I was wandering around trying to find something that will plug the hole I had in my heart. I based my validity and my purpose on my skills, degree, job and appearance; both physical and intellectual. My life was so busy participating in the ‘rat race’ that I had never paused to think of why I was still dissatisfied with the state of my life even with all my accomplishments at such as young age.

Questions I wished I had asked myself; Where am I going with my life? Why am I going there? What are my desires? Why do I have these desires? I.e. is it because it’s a popular path? What does the bible say about my desires? Who are my real friends? and then ask yourself are you sure? These questions are not exhaustive but worth considering – no one continues a journey without checking they are on the right path.

As I type the following scripture comes to mind John 17:14
I have given them Your word and the world has hated them; for they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. This was a segment of the prayer Jesus was petitioning to the Father, on behalf of the disciples. Notice the sentence “…for they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world”. Here Jesus is publicly claiming that the disciples belong to him and therefore are separate from the world. This is besides the fact that they were still in the world.

Do we need to ask ourselves; what/who does our desires align with? The world or the Word? I believe that our purpose lies within the vicinity of the word of God which waters the seed of an inbuilt passion that involves a participation that is bigger than our known abilities. i.e. if its bigger than you, then it involves God, of which was his primary initiation with humanity, which is relationship.

I would like to end with a positive note: Our faith is not based on stories that we need to surmise. Our faith is built on the fact that Jesus is the Son of God, He came to save us and give us life in abundance. We already have taken the first few steps towards a life filled with faith, and Jesus is walking alongside us and he won’t forsake us. “In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish” Matthew 18:14 NIV.
